ESL Support Programme

At British Grammar Schools in Kurdistan (BGS), we provide English learning as a first language for grassroots learners and English as a Second Language (ESL) support for students aged 10 and above. Currently, we are accepting children from the age of three, ensuring that they develop strong bilingual skills from an early stage.

Language acquisition and basic numeracy skills begin as early as 10 months of age, and we harness the natural bilingual capacity of young learners, which starts developing from the age of two. Through a British curriculum and game-based learning approach, students embark on a personalised learning journey, guided by classroom observations, teacher insights, and feedback from curriculum development managers.

At BGS, we recognise that language development is deeply linked to cultural identity. Our approach ensures that students not only learn English as a language but also develop an understanding of English-speaking cultures, while strengthening their awareness of their own heritage and traditions. By fostering cultural sensitivity and linguistic confidence, we equip students to communicate effectively and engage with the world as global citizens.

Specialised Classes and Interventions

At British Grammar Schools in Kurdistan (BGS), we recognise that every student has unique learning needs. To ensure that all students thrive academically and personally, we offer a range of specialised classes and targeted interventions designed to support, challenge, and enrich their learning journey.

Personalised Learning Support

We believe in a student-centred approach that ensures each learner receives the right level of guidance and support. Our specialised intervention programmes cater to students who may need additional assistance in core subjects such as English, mathematics, and science, helping them build confidence and reach their full potential.

Gifted and Talented Programmes

For students who demonstrate exceptional abilities, we offer advanced and enrichment programmes that extend beyond the standard curriculum. These specialised classes provide opportunities for higher-order thinking, problem-solving, and creative exploration, encouraging gifted learners to excel and develop their talents.

Language and Literacy Support

In addition to our English as a First Language (EFL) and English as a Second Language (ESL) programmes, we offer targeted literacy interventions for students who need additional support with reading, writing, or language development. Our structured approach helps learners build strong communication skills while fostering a love for language and literature.

Learning Support for Individual Needs

Our dedicated Learning Support Team works closely with teachers and parents to identify students who may benefit from individualised interventions, including:

  • Small-group instruction to reinforce key concepts.
  • One-to-one academic support tailored to specific learning needs.
  • Study skills and executive function coaching to help students develop independence and confidence in their learning.

Specialist Subject Classes

At BGS, we encourage students to explore their interests and talents through a variety of specialist classes, including:

  • STEM and Robotics – Hands-on experiences in coding, engineering, and problem-solving.
  • Music and Performing Arts – Encouraging creativity through instrumental training, drama, and vocal performance.
  • Sports and Physical Education – Developing teamwork, leadership, and physical fitness through a structured sports curriculum.
  • Creative Arts and Design – Fostering artistic expression and critical thinking through visual arts and design projects.

By offering specialised classes and tailored interventions, BGS ensures that every student receives the support, enrichment, and personalised attention they need to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

CEFR Guidelines at BGS

At British Grammar Schools in Kurdistan (BGS), we align our language learning programmes with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), ensuring that students develop proficiency in English according to internationally recognised standards. The CEFR framework provides a clear and structured approach to language learning, assessment, and progression, enabling students to build strong communication skills at each stage of their education.

What is CEFR?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard used to measure and describe language ability. It is divided into six levels:

  • A1 (Beginner) – Basic language use, simple phrases and expressions.
  • A2 (Elementary) – Understanding and communicating in everyday situations.
  • B1 (Intermediate) – Independent communication with some fluency.
  • B2 (Upper Intermediate) – Confident and effective communication in various contexts.
  • C1 (Advanced) – Proficient language use in academic and professional settings.
  • C2 (Mastery) – Near-native fluency, complex language structures and deep comprehension.

How BGS Uses CEFR in English Learning

At BGS, we use the CEFR framework to:

  • Assess students’ language proficiency and track their progress.
  • Set clear learning objectives for English as a First Language (EFL) and Second Language (ESL) learners.
  • Prepare students for internationally recognised qualifications, such as the Oxford Test of English, IGCSEs, and Oxford AQA examinations.
  • Tailor language instruction to meet the needs of individual learners, ensuring they develop the reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills required for academic success.

By following the CEFR guidelines, BGS ensures that students gain the linguistic competence and confidence needed to communicate effectively in academic, social, and professional settings, both locally and internationally.
